Experimental Investigation of State and Parameter Estimation within Reconfigurable Battery Systems

Abstract: The battery system is one of the most-important, but also -critical components in the electric power-train. The battery’s system states and parameters are commonly tracked by the battery monitoring system. However, in reality, the accuracy of the state and parameter estimation may suffer from insufficient excitation of the system. Since the current states and parameters serve as the basis for many battery management system functions, this might lead to incorrect operation and severe damage. Reconfigurable batt… Show more

“…In this study, the conditions are voltage conditions, but they could also be over-temperature conditions in certain contexts as seen in the simulation or even conditions related to model-based parameters that the state of the art is beginning to use to optimize fast charging in conventional systems [44]. In this area, SRBs could gain an advantage from the prospect of improved cell parameter identification capabilities [45][46][47].…”

“…In conventional battery systems, Battery Management System (BMS) cannot intervene in the operation of the individual battery cells due to the rigid connection of the battery cells and the performance of the entire battery system is limited by the weakest individual cell. In addition to improved inverter performance, the reconfiguration capability of the MLI can be used to manipulate the operation of individual battery cells to perform BMS tasks such as balancing [13,16,[18][19][20][21][22], bad-block management [23] and advanced cell monitoring through reconfiguration [23][24][25][26].…”
