Experimental Investigation of Particulate Diverter Used to Enhance Fracture Complexity

Abstract: Enhancing complexity of the created fracture geometry is the primary challenge for hydraulic fracturing treatment design in shale formations because of their stress anisotropy. Therefore, near-wellbore diversion is required to evenly stimulate all perforated clusters while far-field diversion inside the created fracture induces additional branch fracturing by overcoming the stresses holding the natural fractures closed. Solid particles with different shapes and sizes are widely used as diverting agents during … Show more

“…studied the optimal diverter composition and ratio for fracture plugging with different fracture widths by simulating an open fracture model through a core experimental device. Gomaa et al investigated the bridging and plugging ability of particle diverters using disc grooves to simulate fractures and found that the size of particles forming bridging and plugging should be larger than 40% of the fracture width. Other studies ,, performed a series of plugging experiments with acid-etched fracture models to investigate the plugging behavior of fiber and particle formulas on different fracture surfaces.…”

“…The thin and dense temporary plugging zone can be formed quickly under the action of pressure difference (Figure 1), which can bear high pressure and promote fracture diverting. After a certain period of time, the plug can be removed by itself or manually [6,7]. Investigating the propagation behavior of hydraulic fractures during TPDF in coal seam is of great significance for the treatment parameters design.…”
