Experimental INVESTIGATION OF influence WEDM PARAMETERS ON SURFACE ROUGHNESS AND FLATNESS DEVIATION

Abstract: Wire electrical discharge machining (EDM) is a modern technology that is widely used in the production of difficult to cut conductive materials. Stochastic nature of electrical discharges causing to difficult to identify the influence WEDM parameters on surface roughness and dimensional accuracy of machining parts. Predicting favorable machining conditions for the required surface finish and dimensional accuracy plays a key role in the process. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to build empirical mod… Show more

“…First, these geometric deviations depend on the limit values of the accuracy of the hardware and software guidance of the wire electrode and the workpiece. This was also confirmed by Oniszczuk-Swiercz [19]. Other factors entering the process, which result in undesired geometric form deviations, are the properties of the wire electrode and those of the workpiece material.…”

“…In the case of materials with low machinability, unconventional machining processes are used in order to improve their quality. One of the technologies that are suitable for processing this kind of materials and simultaneously allow to obtain sufficiently low roughness of the treated surface (Ra up to 1.0 µm for aluminum, 0.8 µm for brass, 0.7 µm for alloy steels [25]) is electrical discharge machining (EDM) [26,27]. Due to the high geometrical complexity of processed elements, a special type of EDM process, which is wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM), is sometimes used [28].…”

“…Using a working electrode with dimensions less than / equal to 0.1 mm allows for the production of microelements. In WEDM electric discharges occur between the wire electrode and the workpiece, causing the material to be locally removed by melting and evaporation, as a result of the impact of thermal processes from discharge [1][2][3][4][5][6]. On the surface of the workpiece and the working electrode, craters are formed (Figure 1).…”
