Experimental investigation of fracture damage of notched granite beams under cyclic loading using DIC and AE techniques

Abstract: Fracture experiments of three-point bending notched granite beams were performed under cyclic loading using digital image correlation (DIC) and acoustic emission (AE) techniques. The damage evolution process of the specimen under cyclic loading was analysed on the basis of AE ring count and b value. The strain and displacement fields and the fracture process zone (FPZ) ahead of the crack tip were revealed by DIC. The results showed that the AE characteristics of rock fracture indicated a noticeable Kaiser effe… Show more

“…2. According to the virtual crack model, 24,25 it was assumed that the rise of the load-CMOD curves is approximately linear to non-linear, owing to the virtual crack extension at the front of the concrete crack tip. The effective crack length of the FRP-strengthened concrete consists of a macro fracture and crack process zone.…”

“…The DIC method has potential value for progressing the study of rock mechanics. Therefore, it has been used to some extent in the study of rock failure in recent years 27–29 . For example, in the fracture behavior of both brittle and ductile multi‐flawed rock masses, researchers used DIC technology to reveal the failure mechanism of brittle and ductile multi‐flawed rock masses and obtained the crack coalescence mode and failure mode 30 .…”

“…[12][13][14][15][16] In recent years, rock mass instability events resulting from the stress disturbance in civil and mining engineering emerge frequently, and many studies have paid attention to revealing the cyclic or fatigue mechanical behaviors of crack-like rock. [17][18][19] In summary, the above studies have greatly broadened the understanding of the failure mechanism of jointed rock.…”
