Experimental investigation of enhancement of carbon dioxide foam stability, pore plugging, and oil recovery in the presence of silica nanoparticles

Abstract: The influence of surface-modified silica (SiO 2) nanoparticles on the stability and pore plugging properties of foams in porous media was investigated in this study. The pore plugging ability of foams was estimated from the pressure drop induced during foam propagation in porous media. The results clearly showed that the modified SiO 2 nanoparticlestabilized foam exhibited high stability, and the differential pressure increased in porous media by as much as three times. The addition of SiO 2 nanoparticles to t… Show more

“…In pump injectors from injectants to equipment, ISCO pump was used. At 0.5 mL/min, crude oil was introduced into the core to represent a laminar flow (Shiran and Skauge 2013 ; Kumar and Mandal 2018 ; Risal et al 2019 ; Agi et al 2019b ; Bila et al 2020 ). The system was heated for 24 h to reach equilibrium.…”

“…Foam generation is responsible for the formation of liquid films (lamellas), that segregates gas bubbles (Risal et al 2019). In situ lamella generation is as the result of different mechanisms, such as snap-off, leave-behind and lamella division.…”

“…Commonly used chemical additives include organic compounds, electrolysis quality, nanoparticles, polymers, and liquid crystals (Farzaneh and Sohrabi, 2015;Lv et al, 2014;Rezvani et al, 2020;Yan et al, 2011). For example, Risal et al (2019) investigated the enhancement of carbon dioxide foam stability, pore plugging, and oil recovery in the presence of silica nanoparticles. Wang proposed enhancing the foam system by adding polymer additives into the foam (Wang and Wang, 2004).…”
