Experimental Infection in Mice with Bacillus licheniformis

Abstract: Summary The pathogenicity of Bacillus licheniformis was assessed in normal and immunodepressed BALB/c mice. The animals were challenged intravenously with 4 times 107 colony forming units of B. licheniformis (ATCC 14580) and both normal and immunodepressed mice were susceptible. However, the infection was more severe in the immunosuppressed animals. In normal mice, lesions were restricted to the liver and kidneys, while lesions also occurred in other organs of immunodepressed mice. By crossed immunoelectrophor… Show more

“…The pathological changes were in general similar to those previously described (1). It was obvious that hepatitis developed following immunodepression probably due to haematogenous spread of intestinal microorganisms which penetrated the intestinal barrier.…”

“…Immunostaining was performed using a peroxidase-antiperoxidase (PAP) technique, working with a primary polyclonal antibody raised in rabbits against somatic antigens of B. licheniformis (ATCC 14580) (1 ). Sections of formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded murine brain tissue experimentally infected with B. lichenijormis (ATCC 14580) (Agerholm et a/., unpublished) were used as controls and run in parallel in all immunostainings performed.…”

“…The higher sensitivity and specificity of unabsorbed antisera raised against somatic antigens (enzymes and intra-cellular structural components) is in accordance with previous immunohistochemical studies of bovine pathogenic bacteria, in which antisera against somatic and wall antigens of Bacillus Iicheniformis and A . pyogenes, were produced (1,14). The slight cross-reactivity with Pasteurella bacteria of the antiserum raised against the somatic antigens of H. somnus (939/90) probably resulted from the presence of small LPS-fractions within the preparation of somatic antigens used for immunization.…”

“…However, without prior lesions it has no potential to penetrate the body 's outer barriers. However, abortions in sheep and cattle have been documented, and it has been demonstrated experimentally that Bacillus licheniformis is capable of infecting bovine placenta (Syrjälä et al, 2007;Agerholm et al, 1999).…”
