“…Mycoplasmas are wall-less bacteria which are mostly harmless commensals but can also be associated with clinical symptoms from nongonococcal urethritis (12) to rheumatoid arthritis. One species, Mycoplasma arthritidis, has been studied particularly well with respect to its arthritogenic properties (47). It releases a superantigen whose structure has been elucidated and whose functional domains were identified (4).…”

“…It is a naturally occurring arthritogen of rats and mice (Cole & Ward, 1973) that has previously been demonstrated to show antigenic differences among strains (Washburn & Hirsch, 1990 ;Stadtlander & Watson, 1992 ;Washburn e t al., 1995). Experimentally-induced M. artbritidis arthritis exemplifies the prominent features associated with many mycoplasma infections (Cole e t al., 1985a, b) and is therefore widely used as model for studying pathogenic mechanisms (Kirchhoff et al, 1983a(Kirchhoff et al, , b, 1984(Kirchhoff et al, , 1989Washburn & Ramsey, 1989;Washburn e t al., 1993;Cole & Griffiths, 1993). Since this model is well characterized and easy to manipulate, its use should help increase understanding of the biological functions of mycoplasma antigenic variation and its possible relationship to natural disease.…”

“…In addition, two potentially relevant cases positive for antibody to HIV have been described, one being a 27 year old homosexual man with diarrhoea, urethritis, conjunctivitis, arthritis, and cryptosporidial enteritis,2 and the other a 4 year old child (sex unknown) with cryptosporidiosis who developed conjunctivitis as part of a more profound systemic illness (which was subsequently diagnosed as measles). 3 Our patient had conjunctivitis and scattered arthralgic and myalgic pains associated with her gastroenteritic illness; accordingly, although the pathogenesis of cryptosporidial enteritis in immunocompetent subjects remains poorly understood, it is feasible that Reiter's syndrome may represent a potential clinical consequence of the condition. It may be pertinent to note that unlike the almost total male exclusivity of Reiter's syndrome associated with urethritis, among cases of Reiter's syndrome associated with gastroenteritis (of whatever underlying cause) a much larger proportion occur in women.4 In addition, the syndrome has been reported occurring in sexually inactive children.4 STEPHEN Raised plasma concentrations of endothelin-1 in systemic lupus erythematosus Sir: Endothelin-I is a newly described vasoconstrictor peptide produced and secreted by vascular endothelial cells.'…”
