Experimental Implementation and Performance Evaluation of an IoT Access Gateway for the Modbus Extension

Abstract: This paper presents the relevant aspects regarding the experimental implementation and performance evaluation of an Internet of things (IoT) gateway for the Modbus extension. The proposed Modbus extension specifications are extended by defining the new optimized message format, and the structure of the acquisition cycle for obtaining a deterministic temporal behavior and solutions are presented for the description of devices at the MODBUS protocol level. Three different implementations are presented, and the M… Show more

“…While the Application Protocol Data Unit (APDU) is identical for all Modbus lower layers, the client/server scheme used by Modbus exploits the full potential of the different possibilities afforded by the lower layer presently in use. The following is a summary of the ModbusE extension described in the literature in [ 2 , 22 ]. Thus, ModbusE uses two types of objects: PDO (Process Data Object) for transferring processing data; SDO (Service Data Object) for setup, servicing, and testing.…”

“…Compared with the previous publication [ 22 ], the server module proposed in this paper is a novelty because it is the first ModbusE (MBE)-based implementation integrated into an SH. The system required the implementation of the Modbus RTU protocol at BIoT (smart switch) server stations, respectively, as well as the completion and definition of new requirements for the Modbus protocol extension called ModbusE at the MBE_RTU server station level with 100% compatibility with the maintained Modbus RTU protocol [ 23 ].…”

“…In order to deal with diferent application scenarios in the industrial control system, many communication protocols are designed for ICS, such as Modbus, Distributed Network Protocol 3 (DNP3), and Controller Area Network Bus (CANBUS). Among them, as a serial communication protocol, Modbus has become one of the most popular communication protocols due to its simple and easy-tounderstand messages format and open standard [7]. Modbus TCP protocol is a communication mode of Modbus protocol, which is an Ethernet application-layer communication protocol based on TCP/IP.…”

“…Today, numerous application fields are unthinkable without them: factory automation [7], distributed process control [8], building automation and energy distribution in general, but also the automotive industry, railway applications and aeronautical field. All these sectors rely heavily on the availability of suitable networks that meet special requirements of individual applications [9], [10].…”
