Experimental fault-tolerant control of a PMSM drive

Abstract: The paper describes a study and an experimental verification of remedial strategies against failures occurring in the inverter power devices of a permanent-magnet synchronous motor drive. The basic idea of this design consists in incorporating a fourth inverter pole, with the same topology and capabilities of the other conventional three poles. This minimal redundant hardware, appropriately connected and controlled, allows the drive to face a variety of power device fault conditions while maintaining a smooth … Show more

“…The cost of the motor will also be higher because the neutral has to be brought out. If an application requires rated post-fault power then the phase current increases by factor of √3 [11]. Therefore the cost of each switching power device as well as dc bus filter capacitor increases by about 50%.…”

“…A number of motor and inverter configurations with differing degrees of fault tolerant capability for industrial and aviation applications have appeared in the literature [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]. Some include BLDC motor drives with concentrated phase windings where each phase is connected to an H-bridge inverter [6][7].…”

“…By using the fault signature developed by each seven fault group as well as by introducing free-wheeling mode detection, the open faults in multiple switches can be identified in a reliable and systematic way. In addition, rather than confining the number of simultaneous open-switches to only two, the proposed scheme aims to extend the open fault problem in multiple Energies 2018, 11,101 4 of 23 switches into a general case. The main objective is to realize a rapid and reliable online fault localization algorithm under the condition of simultaneous open-switches (up to three) without requiring any extra hardware or sensors in order that the algorithm can be easily installed in the main CPU of a commercial drive system.…”

“…However, neither simulation nor experimental results were presented. For the PM BLAC machine, an ELES scheme for fault tolerant control purpose, together with SVPWM, has been proposed for an interior permanent magnet (IPM) machine in [9][10]. This scheme introduced a feed-forward compensation scheme to the reference voltages to achieve high performance.…”
