Experimental evaluation of the sound absorption and insulation of an innovative coating through different testing methods

Abstract: The Lombardy Region and the Construction Technologies Institute of the National Research Council of Italy are promoting the development of an innovative coating nano-material for building retrofitting. The research aims at obtaining a material with higher sound absorption features when compared to conventional plasters, as well as fair thermal and sound insulation performances. In both design and testing stages, it is important to identify and measure key acoustic parameters. This article presents the characte… Show more

“…The definition of "sandwich" is here quite broad. For example, Scamoni et al [28] use this approach to estimate the sound insulation performances of a coated brick wall, while Santoni et al [29] study the vibro-acoustic behavior of wood plastic composite panels, which, given their inner structure, are treated as orthotropic sandwich elements with lightweight core, obtaining the bending stiffness according to the Nilsson and Nilsson's model and feeding it to the transfer matrix method to optimize the structure in terms of sound transmission loss. Piana and Marchesini [30] investigate how to improve the comfort in the owner's cabin of a yacht by examining possible materials to build the bulkhead separating it from the crew cabin.…”

“…In-situ measurement are of great interest since they help designing scenarios [2] and test the simulated ones [3]. Furthermore, new metrics such as exergy [4] are adopted especially in Research & Development plans for innovative solutions [5] in the field of energy [6], acoustics [7] and comfort [8]. Great attention in the last decade was given to energy involving buildings at different scales, from the single one to urban level [9] but neglecting the main aspects of indoor wellbeing [10] mainly related to thermal insulation layers [11] and acoustic materials used in the ambient [12].…”

“…Indeed, the results of any acoustical parameters measuring session could likely be related to the methods and instruments utilised. Since these acoustic parameters are physical data, this uncertainty should be totally avoided, especially where innovative solutions are tested and evaluated [8,9]. It should be also noticed that the environmental condition (i.e.…”
