“…By amending the New York City building code to require reinforcement of existing structures, these buildings may have an improved ultimate load, displacement capacity, ductility, and energy dissipation in response to earthquake events (Konthesingha, 2015). The most concerning cases the New York City Building Code would need to consider are those related to unreinforced masonry buildings, many of which have historical value and will be costly to retrofit.…”

“…Figure 3 displays examples of NSM-FRP strengthening orientations for in plane shear applications. The test variables, specimen details and observed failure modes of masonry related in plane shear existing experimental studies in the literature are summarized in Table 4 [33,34,35,36,37]. In plane shear strength of URM walls can be improved using NSM-CRFP strips.…”

“…The same researchers [37] also tested fully fixed (zero rotation) support conditioned wall panels with two different dimensional aspect ratio of 0.5 and 1, that were also vertically pre-compressed and then subjected to monotonic or in-plane cyclic lateral displacement. Some of the walls were strengthened using either horizontal, vertical, or a combination of both NSM-CFRP strips.…”

“…Both fiber-reinforced polymer sheets and the ductility of a cross-diagonal polyethylene terephthalate fiber-reinforced polymer sheet can improve the in-plane shear strength of brick walls [1]. An experimental study [5] was conducted to assess the URM shear panel with near-surface-mounted (NSM) carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) strips, and the results showed an increase in ultimate load (9%), displacement capacity (up to 133%), ductility, and energy dissipation (up to 382%). The seismic performance of masonry building models was improved using a cost-effective material, including polypropylene (PP) band and steel wire mesh (WM) [6].…”
