Abstract. The aim of this article is to describe and interpret qualitative and quantitative changes at rock matrix scale of lower-upper Cretaceous sandstones exposed to supercritical (SC) CO 2 and brine. The effects of experimental injection of CO 2 -rich brine during the first injection phases were studied at rock matrix scale, in a potential deep sedimentary reservoir in northern Spain (Utrillas unit, at the base of the Cenozoic Duero Basin).Experimental CO 2 -rich brine was exposed to sandstone in a reactor chamber under realistic conditions of deep saline formations (P ≈ 7.8 MPa, T ≈ 38 • C and 24 h exposure time). After the experiment, exposed and non-exposed equivalent sample sets were compared with the aim of assessing possible changes due to the effect of the CO 2 -rich brine exposure. Optical microscopy (OpM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) aided by optical image analysis (OIA) were used to compare the rock samples and get qualitative and quantitative information about mineralogy, texture and pore network distribution. Complementary chemical analyses were performed to refine the mineralogical information and to obtain whole rock geochemical data. Brine composition was also analyzed before and after the experiment.The petrographic study of contiguous sandstone samples (more external area of sample blocks) before and after CO 2 -rich brine injection indicates an evolution of the pore network (porosity increase ≈ 2 %). It is probable that these measured pore changes could be due to intergranular quartz matrix detachment and partial removal from the rock sample, considering them as the early features produced by the CO 2 -rich brine. Nevertheless, the whole rock and brine chemical analyses after interaction with CO 2 -rich brine do not present important changes in the mineralogical and chemical configuration of the rock with respect to initial conditions, ruling out relevant precipitation or dissolution at these early stages to rock-block scale. These results, simulating the CO 2 injection near the injection well during the first phases (24 h) indicate that, in this environment where CO 2 enriches the brine, the mixture principally generates local mineralogical/textural readjustments on the external area of the samples studied.The application of OpM, SEM and optical image analysis have allowed an exhaustive characterization of the sandstones studied. The procedure followed, the porosity characterization and the chemical analysis allowed a preliminary approximation of the CO 2 -brine-rock interactions and could be applied to similar experimental injection tests.

Prediction of hydrogeochemical effects of geological CO 2 sequestration is crucial for planning an industrial or even experimental scale injection of carbon dioxide gas into geological formations. This paper presents a preliminary study of the suitability of saline aquifer associated with a depleted oil field in Czech Part of Vienna Basin, as potential greenhouse gas repository. Two steps of modeling enabled prediction of immediate changes in the aquifer and caprocks impacted by the first stage of CO 2 injection and the assessment of long-term effects of sequestration. Hydrochemical modeling and experimental tests of rock-water-gas interactions allowed for evaluation of trapping mechanisms and assessment of CO 2 storage capacity of the formations. In the analyzed aquifer, CO 2 gas may be locked in mineral form in dolomite and dawsonite, and the calculated trapping capacity reaches 13.22 kgCO 2 /m 3 . For the caprock, the only mineral able to trap CO 2 is dolomite, and trapping capacity equals to 5.07 kgCO 2 /m 3 .

The objective of this study was to determine the influence of the possible CO 2 geological storage in the Baltic Region on the composition and properties of host rocks to support more reliable petrophysical and geophysical models of CO 2 plume. The geochemical, mineralogical, and petrophysical evolution of reservoir sandstones of Cambrian Series 3 Deimena Formation and transitional clayey carbonate caprocks of Lower Ordovician Zebre Formation from two offshore structures in Latvia and Lithuania and two onshore structures in Latvia, induced by laboratory-simulated CO 2 geological storage, was studied for the first time in the Baltic Region. The geochemical, mineralogical, and petrophysical parameters were measured in 15 rock samples, before and after the alteration experiment. The diagenetic alterations of reservoir rocks were represented by carbonate cementation in the top of the onshore South Kandava structure, and quartz cementation and compaction, reducing the reservoir quality, in the deepest offshore E7 structure in Lithuania. The shallowest E6 structure offshore Latvia was least affected by diagenetic processes and had the best reservoir quality that was mainly preserved during the experiment. Carbonate cement was represented by calcite and ankerite in the transitional reservoir sandstones of very low initial permeability in the upper part of the South Kandava structure. Its dissolution caused a significant increase in the effective porosity and permeability of sandstones, a decrease in the weight of samples, bulk and matrix density, and P and S wave velocities, demonstrating short-term dissolution processes. Only slight geochemical changes occurred during the experiment in offshore reservoir sandstones. Minor dissolution of carbonate and clay cements, feldspar and some accessory minerals, and possible minor precipitation of pore-filling secondary minerals associated with slight variations in rock properties, demonstrating both short-term and long-term processes, were suggested. As a novelty, this research shows the relationship between diagenetic alterations of the Cambrian Series 3 Deimena Formation reservoir sandstones and their changes caused by the CO 2 injection-like experiment.
