The present work introduces a methodology to obtain a discrete time state space representation of an electrical network using the nodal [G] matrix of the Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP) solution. This is the first time the connection between the EMTP nodal analysis solution and a corresponding state-space formulation is presented. Compared to conventional state space solutions, the nodal EMTP solution is computationally much more efficient. Compared to the phasor solutions used in transient stability analysis, the proposed approach captures a much wider range of eigenvalues and system operating states. A fundamental advantage of extracting the system eigenvalues directly from the EMTP solution is the ability of the EMTP to follow the characteristics of nonlinearities. The system's trajectory can be accurately traced and the calculated eigenvalues and eigenvectors correctly represent the system's instantaneous dynamics. In addition, the algorithm can be used as a tool to identify network partitioning subsystems suitable for real-time hybrid power system simulator environments, including the implementation of multi-time scale solutions. The proposed technique can be implemented as an extension to any EMTPbased simulator. Within our UBC research group, it is aimed at extending the capabilities of our real-time PC-cluster Object Virtual Network Integrator (OVNI) simulator.

RESUMOEste trabalho apresenta uma técnica alternativa para a correção de ondas distorcidas provenientes da saturação dos transformadores de corrente (TCs) através de ferramentas inteligentes baseadas em Redes Neurais Artificiais (RNAs) recorrentes. Os TCs estão presentes em Sistemas Elétricos de Potência com a finalidade de proteção e medição, sendo altamente susceptíveis à saturação. O programa EMTP-ATP (Electromagnetic Transients Program) foi escolhido como ferramenta computacional para a simulação de um sistema elétrico utilizado na geração de dados de treinamento e testes para as RNAs. Muitas arquiteturas de redes neurais artificiais foram treinadas e testadas. Resultados promissores relativos ao novo método são apresentados. PALAVRAS-CHAVE ABSTRACTThis paper presents an alternative approach to the correction of distorted waveforms caused by the current transformer (CT) saturation. This method uses the Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) recurrent algorithms. Current transformers are present in the electric power systems for protection and measurements and they are highly susceptible to the saturation phenomenon. The EMTP-ATP software has been chosen as the computational tool to simulate the electrical system in order to generate data to train and test the ANNs. Many ANN architectures were trained and tested. Encouraging results related to the application of the new method are presented.

Abstract--Current transformers form an integral part of protective systems. Ideal Current Transformers (CTs) are expected to reproduce the primary current faithfully on the secondary side. Often, during fault conditions an important component of current is exponentially decaying DC offset current. Under such conditions the CT saturates, and hence it cannot reproduce the primary current faithfully. This paper deals with experimental methods for determining CT performance under saturation. A laboratory setup has been developed to observe CT response under steady state and fault conditions. Thus, it is now possible to experimentally evaluate the CT performance under fault conditions.
