Experimental Enquiry into Automatically Orchestrated Live Video Communication in Social Settings

Abstract: ABSTRACT'Orchestration' refers to the ability of a live video communication system to adapt in real-time to the communication context with a view to enhance the quality of mediation and subsequently the quality of interaction between participants. For example, this can be done by reframing the cameras and changing the way in which the video content is mixed on each screen. To be a feasible solution, orchestration has to be an automatic process. This paper reports a study of orchestration carried out in the soc… Show more

“…According to [10], "orchestration" refers to the ability of a live video communication system to adapt in real-time to each context to enhance the quality of mediation and subsequently the quality of interaction between participants. In the case of Traction, applying it for community opera performances, this paradigm enables colocated performances with multiple voices on a single performance [6] .…”

“…Ursu (Ursu, M. F. et al, 2015) presents an experimental investigation into automaticallyorchestrated, video-mediated communication within various social group interaction settings such as friends playing social games, chatting and having fun, from two separate living rooms, using the TV as the communication conduit to the other room. This system generates one video stream from multiple cameras automatically based on predefined orchestrated logic.…”

“…In live systems used to represent video communications, complex algorithms can be developed that dynamically determine how best to represent the conversation [24]. But in theatre the director can select, in advance, the best camera shots.…”
