Experimental dryer design for agricultural products

Abstract: This study consisted of designing and building an experimental dryer that allows working with different temperatures and velocities of the air, aiming to perform studies on thin-and thick-layer drying of agricultural products. The project was divided into three stages: heat source designing, dryer geometric parameters, and fan selection to meet operational demand. Heating was made by a set of six electrical resistances totaling 12 kW and the drying bed in thin layer was composed of two trays with diameter of 0… Show more

“…Para o início de projetos ou adaptações de estruturas e equipamentos utilizados na póscolheita, tais como silos e sistemas de transporte, secagem, limpeza, classificação e aeração, é fundamental a obtenção de dados referentes às principais propriedades físicas do produto trabalhado (GONELI et al, 2016;CARVALHO, 2015). Dentre essas propriedades, podem ser citadas a massa específica aparente, porosidade intergranular, circularidade, esfericidade, área projetada e superficial, entre outras.…”

“…Each triplicate contained approximately 7 g of leaves, which had an initial moisture content of approximately 2.76 (decimal, d.b.). The rest of the sample was immediately dried in an experimental fixedbed dryer, as described by Goneli et al (2016). Drying was performed for various drying air conditions (Table 1), until the leaves reached the final moisture content of approximately 0.11 (decimal, d.b.).…”

“…In a steady state, the amount of air supplied to the drying chamber S a(in * ) (Figure 3) can be determined empirically based on two parameters specified by the manufacturer: fan specifications and the hydraulic resistance of a grain layer through which air is passed [47]. Hydraulic resistance is determined by the dryer's structure, grain filling level, grain type, and its moisture content [48][49][50].…”
