Experimental demonstration of quenched transmission effect of an ultrathin metallic grating

Abstract: We report on the experimental study of an anomalous transmission effect in ultrathin metallic gratings, where the metal thickness is much thinner than the skin depth. In particular, incident transverse magnetic polarized waves are reflected while incident transverse electric polarized waves are transmitted. This anomalous effect is strongly dependent on the metal thickness and metal width. We systematically investigate and demonstrate the anomalous effect and find the optimized nanostrip thickness and width by… Show more

“…Moreover, due to the complex structure of the meta-materials/meta-surfaces and the fabrication difficulty, they are not suitable for practical applications. Previously, we proposed a theoretical model to investigate the anomalous reflection of ultra-thin metallic nano-strips, the simulation shows a reasonable agreements with the corresponding experimental results, 19 and the phase modulation was also analyzed. 10 Considering that the ultra-thin metallic nano-strips is transparent for visible light, this article puts forward an idea of ultra-thin metallic nano-strips based polarization converter which has a function of traditional quarter-wave plate.…”

“…The basic execution equations for UMG are given in Section II. Section III provides numerical evidence that the calculated results of the proposed method are well agreed with the traditional methods [ 6–8 ] , the CST simulations and reference [17]. The conclusion is given in Section IV.…”

“…They often have optical properties different from the same bulk material. Partial transparency and conductivity allow using them as electrodes for solar cells [1] and other optoelectronic devices [2,3]. Thin metal films are widely used in optical instrumentation (mirrors, beam splitters, different specific coatings and so on).…”
