Experimental Demonstration of Laser Oscillation without Population Inversion via Quantum Interference in Rb

Abstract: Laser oscillation without population inversion is demonstrated experimentally in a V-type atomic configuration within the D 1 and D 2 lines of Rb vapor. It is shown that the effect is due to the atomic interference. The experimental results, as first predicted by careful theoretical analysis, are in a good agreement with detailed calculations.

“…In particular, excited-state population grows with time differently for the multiphoton excitation and the QASER, as indicated in Eqs. (20) and (21). We also show that the QASER is analogous to excitation of a system of two weakly coupled oscillators, which displays the difference combination resonance when the low modulation frequency matches the frequency difference between two close normal modes of the coupled system.…”

“…During the last two decades, lasing without inversion (LWI) has been discussed in the literature for various schemes [18][19][20][21]. Typically, LWI is achieved by quantum interference in emission or absorption channels.…”

“…The search for new structures and designs that can lead to intersubband gain without population inversion is thus both fascinating from the fundamental physics point of view as it is relevant for * Presented at the International Conference on Semiconductor Materials and Optics, SMMO 2008, October 9-10, 2008, Warsaw, Poland † E-mail: M.Pereira@shu.ac.uk applications. To the best of the author's knowledge, the first demonstration of lasing without inversion appeared in atomic optics and was based on quantum interference in Rb atoms [4]. Here we analyse a very different scenario in intersubband emitters [5][6][7].…”

“…Such a three-level model is not known to show gain unless additional fields are introduced. For example, an incoherent pumping along the probing transition of a V-system will give rise to gain [7,8] . Other three-level models with coherent and incoherent pumping also exhibit gain [9].…”
