Experimental culture of the river prawn Macrobrachium americanum larvae (Bate, 1868), with emphasis on feeding and stocking density effect on survival

Abstract: ABSTRACT. The cauque river prawn Macrobrachium americanum occurs along the Pacific coast of America. This prawn can grow to a large size, making it an interesting option for aquaculture production. Currently, supplies of juveniles are limited because hatchery and laboratory-reared larvae are difficult to raise. This study assesses larval survival for different combinations of stocking density and feeding from larvae cultivated in green water. From these combinations, larvae fed with Artemia nauplii and maintai… Show more

“…Recent investigations have focused mostly on production and nutrition of M . americanum juveniles (García‐Guerrero & Apún‐Molina, ; Méndez‐Martínez et al, , ; Pérez‐Rodríguez et al, ; Soberanes‐Yepiz et al, ; Yamasaki‐Granados et al, ). One of the main problems for the successful implementation of aquaculture of this river prawn is the typically low larval survival rate under culture conditions (Yamasaki‐Granados et al, ).…”

One of the main problems for the successful implementation of aquaculture of this river prawn is the typically low larval survival rate under culture conditions (Yamasaki‐Granados et al, ). Therefore, any attempt at cultivation would depend on the collection of wild specimens and the success of reproduction in aquaculture is closely related to the nutritional status of broodstock as an initial condition for reproduction (Bray & Lawrence, ; Racotta, Palacios, & Ibarra, ).…”

“…Wild prawns have already entered regional markets. Wild populations, at least along the coast of Mexico, are decreasing each year, particularly larger specimens (García‐Guerrero, Orduña‐Rojas & Cortés‐Jacinto ; Yamasaki‐Granados, García‐Guerrero, Vega‐Villasante, Castellanos‐León, Cavalli & Cortés‐Jacinto ). Wild populations have declined due to overharvesting, altered habitat and pollution (Yamasaki‐Granados et al .…”
