Experimental comparison of two methods to study barley responses to partial submergence

Abstract: Background Crop yield is dependent on climate conditions, which are becoming both more variable and extreme in some areas of the world as a consequence of global climate change. Increased precipitation and flooding events are the cause of important yield losses due to waterlogging or (partial) submergence of crops in the field. Our ability to screen efficiently and quickly for varieties that have increased tolerance to waterlogging or (partial) submergence is important. Barley, a staple crop wo… Show more

“…Highly controlled conditions and growth media allow for the isolation of anoxia stress by removing compounding factors found in the field or pots. Laboratory-based methods such as hydroponics, agar, and starch have been used to simulate the hypoxic conditions of waterlogging ( Hunt et al , 2002 ; Bertholdsson, 2013 ; Miricescu et al , 2021 ). The use of such methods with a tighter control over the growth media, i.e.…”

“…As one of the severe abiotic stress factors, waterlogging stress negatively affected the development and growth of crops (Yu et al 2020, Miricescu et al 2021. 6-BA is a cytokinin and an artificial synthetic plant growth regulator, which can help crops overcome the negative effects of abiotic stresses, including waterlogging (Ghaleh et al 2020, Hu et al 2020).…”

“…Waterlogging (as well as flooding) is an important source of crop losses (de San Celedonio et al ., 2014; Kaur et al ., 2020), however, not all crop species are equally affected. Barley has been identified as a particularly sensitive crop with up to 20-25% crop losses due to waterlogging (Byrne et al ., 2021; de San Celedonio et al ., 2016; de San Celedonio et al ., 2014; Liu et al ., 2020; Miricescu et al ., 2021; Setter and Waters, 2003). Losses have been shown to be more severe if waterlogging occurs at the heading stage (de San Celedonio et al ., 2016; de San Celedonio et al ., 2014; Liu et al ., 2020; Setter and Waters, 2003), but also at early developmental stages (de San Celedonio et al ., 2016; de San Celedonio et al ., 2014).…”
