Experimental chronic compression on the spinal cord of the rabbit by ectopic bone formation in the ligamentum flavum with bone morphogenetic protein

Abstract: This study was conducted to induce chronic spinal cord compression myelopathy in rabbits. The L5 lumbar lamina was cut partially in 70 rabbits, and bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) was implanted on the ligamentum¯avum in 35 of them. In the BMP group, new bone formed on the dorsal side of the spinal canal and¯attened the spinal cord in an anteroposterior direction. No pathological changes were detected in the intramedullary tissues by light microscopic examination. In rabbits it is possible to induce compressio… Show more

“…The proliferation of cartilaginous tissue triggers the ossification. Fibronectin, bone morphogenetic protein and transforming growth factor-beta may also play a role in the genesis of OLF 4,5,9,11) . However, we did not perform the histological examination.…”

“…However, this characteristic of BMP-2 or BMP-7 might also be harmful. In previous studies new bone formation induced by BMP-2 in the ligamentum flavum resulted in flattening of the spinal cord [36]. Additionally, Hoshi et al [19] was able to show that ossifications of the spinal ligaments induced by BMP-2 can even lead to spinal cord compression.…”

“…In frü-heren Untersuchungen konnte gezeigt werden, dass BMP-2-induzierte Ossifikationen im Lig. flavum zu einer Verdrängung des Myelons führten [41]. Hoshi [19] wies darüber hinaus nach, dass die BMP-2-induzierte Ossifikation spinaler Ligamente, speziell des Lig.…”
