Experimental animal models for rheumatoid arthritis

Abstract: Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune systemic disorder of unknown etiology and is characterized by chronic inflammation and synovial infiltration of immune cells. RA is associated with decreased life expectancy and quality of life. The research on RA is greatly simplified by animal models that help us to investigate the complex system involving inflammation, immunological tolerance and autoimmunity. The animal models of RA with a proven track record of predictability for efficacy in humans include: colla… Show more

“…Compared with human RA, AA shares symptoms such as joint swelling, lymphocyte infiltration and cartilage degradation. Therefore, this model has been extensively used to study the anti‐arthritis effects of drugs and the molecular mechanism of the disease . MTX is a folate inhibitor that has become the most important and frequently prescribed RA treatment, although several new therapeutic options are now available.…”

“…The present study was undertaken to test whether and to what extent a 75% reduction of pharmacologic medication in combination with learned immunosuppression affects the clinical outcome in a rodent model of type II collagen–induced arthritis (CIA) . For this purpose, signs of inflammation (such as swollen joints, paw swelling, and grip strength) as well as histologic alterations of the paws were analyzed.…”

“…Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder that affects the joint synovium. Swelling, inflamed joints, stiffness, and pain are the primary symptoms of RA (Choudhary et al 2018). However, the pathogenetic mechanisms of RA are unclear.…”
