Experimental and theortical results of a circularly polarized elliptical dielectric resonator antenna with a conformal strip excitation

Abstract: A circularly polarized elliptical dielectric resonator antenna (EDRA) has been studied theoretically and experimentally when a single conformal strip is employed for excitation. The antenna has been analyzed using a rigorous moment method model in conjunction with the volume-surfaceintegral-equation (VSIE). The results have been compared to those obtained from measurements with good agreement.

“…An investigation on substrate integrated wave guide in cylindrical DRA has been reported for 4.62% impedance bandwidth . Similarly, several techniques have been adopted for obtaining circular polarization like; using single aperture technique in rectangular DRA, conformal strip in elliptical and rectangular DRA, parasitic strip with hemispherical DRA, quadrature coupler in a hollow rectangular DRA, helical conductor in cylindrical DRA, rotated notched rectangular DRA 17 have been used by some of the researchers for obtaining circular polarization in dielectric resonator antenna. Thus, many articles have shown different techniques for obtaining broadband and circular polarization, respectively.…”

“…There are many measurement methods for identifying modes, such as the image-displaying method, 8,9 radiated field measuring method, 10 mode spectrum measuring method, 11 and waveguide field measuring method. 12 Imagedisplaying method is simple and has no frequency limitation, but it is only applicable to the case where the single-mode or small-scale mixed modes exist. Radiated field measuring method can describe the mode proportions roughly in the case of small-scale mixed modes, but this method is not accurate enough in the case of a large number of modes.…”

“…Therefore, considerable efforts have been made with regard to CP DRAs in recent years. [4][5][6][7][8][9][10] Generally, the CP DRAs can be fed by a single feed or by dual feeds. Although CP DRAs with a single feed have a simple structure, their 3 dB axial ratio (AR) bandwidths are very narrow (about 4%).…”

“…Although CP DRAs with a single feed have a simple structure, their 3 dB axial ratio (AR) bandwidths are very narrow (about 4%). [4][5][6] In contrast, CP DRAs with dual feeds have a wider AR bandwidth, but they require larger and more complex feeding structures. [7] Therefore, the design of single-feed CP DRAs with a compact size and a wide AR bandwidth remains an engineering challenge.…”
