“…Popov et al [14] investigated the phenomenon that can produce high overvoltages internally in large shell-type transformer windings. They also investigated the effect of fast voltage transients, which occur due to circuit breaker pre-strike on transformer insulation [2,15,16]. The importance of considering frequency-dependent behavior of transformer during overvoltage analysis has been reported in many studies [17][18][19].…”

“…In [1], [11], and [12], transformers' transient overvoltages and associated internal voltage propagation are studied by performing measurements and digital simulations. Three types of transformer models could be distinguished for digital simulations; black-box models, transmission-line models, and lumped parameter models.…”

“…In this scenario, fast voltage surges reaching the transformer may match any resonance frequency in some place along windings. The result is a local amplification of voltage, creating an overvoltage at certain points, which can lead to deterioration and failure of its insulation system (Kondala and Gajjar, 2006;Popov and Archa, 1999;Popov et al, 2009Popov et al, , 2001.…”

“…Other papers analyze the behavior of the transformer at terminals during a switching operation in a power system using terminal models obtained from measurements (Kondala and Gajjar, 2006;Popov and Archa, 1999;Popov et al, 2001). In Popov et al (2009), the internal voltage distribution along transformer windings applying switching transient voltages on the transformer terminals obtained from measurements is calculated. However, it is in the previous work (Á lvarez-Mariño and Lopez-Fernandez, 2011), where authors proposed a method capable of both, to obtain the switching waveform at the transformer terminals from terminal model implemented in Electromagnetic Transient Program (EMTP) type and to compute the internal transient voltages along transformer windings caused by opening operation of the VCB.…”
