Experimental and Simulation Investigation on Savonius Turbine: Influence of Inlet-Outlet Ratio Using a Modified Blade Shaped to Improve Performance

Abstract: This study aims to obtain the characteristics of the Savonius turbine based on the ratio of the inlet and outlet blades by using a modified blade shape and analyzing numerical simulations of the speed and pressure around the turbine blades. The use of Savonius turbines can be a solution because it produces large torque even if installed at low wind speed. Savonius blade modification into a double blade with a combination of type L and U aims to capture greater wind energy while generating greater electrical po… Show more

“…Renewable energy is the government's main focus for alternative energy sources that are environmentally friendly and sustainable 14) . Technology development from renewable energy sources has begun, for example, by utilizing solar [15][16][17][18] , water current 19,20) , wave 21,22) , tidal 23,24) , wind [25][26][27][28] , biomass [29][30][31][32] , geothermal 33,34) , or a combination of the above 35,36) .…”

“…The result shows their performance was higher than others, even without any additional forms or shapes. Because the additional blade blocked the number of blades from contacting the water, the generated performance decreased linearly with the increasing proportion of additional blades 28) .…”

“…Based on turbine weight, M. Al-Ghriybah's study investigates the thickness of the turbine base material, which shows that the thickness also increases the turbine weight, so the generated performance increases up to 40% 27) . Further research conducted by Herlambang et al defined that an additional blade between the two conventional blades proves that the shape configuration influences the turbine's ability to extract energy 28) . The basic principle of this development was to maximize the field of catching the water to improve the turbine performance.…”

“…Renewable energy and technology are becoming more and more important as the world is facing serious issues related to pollution, shortage of fuel supply and ozone depletion [1]. Turbines are devices that can be used to convert kinetic energy of flow into electricity [2]. It is mostly used for harvesting wind [3] and hydrokinetic energy [4].…”
