Experimental and quantum chemical investigations on the oxidative stability of sesame oil base stock with synthetic antioxidant additives

Abstract: Depleting resources and increasing environmental pollution caused by the petroleum products made researchers to think about its biodegradable counterparts. Vegetable oils due to its characteristics such as availability, renewability, eco‐friendliness, and biodegradability are progressively encouraged as a replacement for mineral oils in lubricant industry, while enhancement of few properties like the oxidative stability aids in the efficient use of them as the base stock. A generous amount of unsaturation in v… Show more

“…High oxidation stability of TBHQ is because of the longer alkyl chains present in it [23]. Oxidation stability of the oil samples are estimated by measuring the change in viscosity at 40°C after hot oil oxidation test (HOOT) from the fresh sample without subjected to HOOT [24]. Change in dynamic viscosity of neat PO, PO oil samples blended with different weight percentages of TBHQ and SAE20W40 at 40°C are calculated and plotted as shown in Figure 5.…”

“…The application of antioxidants was one of the important ways to improve the oxidation resistance of lubricating oils, [10][11][12] and they were mainly hindered phenols and diphenylamine derivatives. Currently, commercial antioxidants are generally used for the mineral oils and polyalphaolefins, and their structures contain relatively long carbon chains to lower the molecular polarity for the antioxidant solubility in the nonpolar hydrocarbon oils.…”
