Experimental and numerical study on fracture behavior of SiC particle reinforced aluminum matrix composites based on Gurson–Tvergaard–Needleman damage model

Abstract: In this paper, the mechanical behavior of 10 and 14 vol.% SiC p /Al composites was studied with both experiments and numerical analysis. A 3D macrostructure model based on modified Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman (GTN) model was developed to predict the elasto-plastic response and fracture behavior of particle reinforced aluminum matrix composites (PRAMCs). The particle size effects on the plastic strengthening induced by geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs) were introduced, and the size distribution of the … Show more

“…The GTN damage model has been applied widely to predict the ultimate mechanical properties of the alloys in recent decades. [25][26][27][28] The calibration of the GTN damage model relied on the macroscopic mechanical tests generally in previous works. 27,[29][30][31] Because the several parameters in the GTN damage model have physical significance, such as f N to describe the micro void volume fraction at the beginning of nucleation while f c to describe the critical volume fraction for micro void growth and coalescence, 32 the calibration of the parameters considering the anisotropic damage behavior via the XCT method is a further development of the GTN model.…”

“…As the supplementary method of the experimental investigation, the numerical modeling method is used in this work to discuss and reveal the damage behavior together. The calibration of the GTN damage model relied on the macroscopic mechanical tests generally in previous works 27,29–31 .…”
