Under the coupling effect of the defects inside and around pipes, the shear displacement of the joints of old concrete pipes fallen into disrepair usually shows an accelerated deterioration trend, and its excessive value can lead to structural damage or fluid leakage. Therefore, developing a prediction model for the maximum shear displacement of concrete drainage pipe joints with preexisting defects is of crucial significance. To this end, this work selects internal corrosion and erosion voids as the typical defects inside and around old pipes, establishes 300 sets of three‐dimensional fine finite element (FE) models of the concrete drainage pipes with corrosion and void, and verifies the reliability of the developed FE model by the full‐scale tests. Based on the verified FE data, a prediction model is successfully proposed for the assessment of the maximum shear displacement of the concrete drainage pipe joints with corrosion and void defects. Moreover, parameter sensitivity analysis is carried out to reveal their relative contribution to the maximum shear displacement of pipe joints. The results show that the model proposed herein has the ability to accurately predict the maximum shear displacement of the pipe joints. The maximum and minimum relative error between the value predicted by the proposed model and the one computed by the FE model is also 12.4% and 4.8% respectively. Moreover, the traffic load with a contribution of 28.7% has the greatest impact on the maximum shear displacement of pipe joints.

The open or in-filled trenches are often used in engineering practice to mitigate ground vibration induced by different types of vibration sources. A novel approach which is considering the effect of Rayleigh wavelength on the efficiency of open and in-filled trenches coupled with regular specific normalized dimensions was implemented in this study. While impact loading is a very common type of loading (in, e.g., machine foundations, driven pile installation), it was rarely studied in the past. The loading is selected to consist of 12 impact pulses. In this study, it was shown that Rayleigh wavelength controls the effect of trench-normalized dimensions on its performance, and therefore, studying the trench effectiveness based only on its normalized dimensions is a limited assumption. For open trenches, the depth of trench is the key parameter controlling its efficiency, while its width does not have a significant effect except for shallow trenches (normalized width of less than 0.7) in the condition of low Rayleigh wavelength (2.0 m). Also, it was shown that the trench should be installed at a normalized distance of at least 1.0. Furthermore, the numerical results revealed that the effect of the normalized width of the geofoam trench on its efficiency for Rayleigh wavelength $${\lambda }_{R}=2.0 \, \mathrm{m}$$ λ R = 2.0 m was more than that for $${\lambda }_{R}=8.0 \, \mathrm{m}$$ λ R = 8.0 m . Also, several graphs for the design of geofoam trenches under different Rayleigh wavelengths were proposed in this study, which could be useful in practice.

Modeling Test and Numerical Simulation of Vertical Bearing Performance for Rigid-Flexible Composite Pouch Piles with Expanded Bottom (RFCPPEB)

Rigid-flexible composite pouch piles with expanded bottom (RFCPPEB) are generally considered as new symmetrical piles in practical engineering, but their bearing characteristics and design method are still not completely understood. The objective of this study is to investigate the vertical bearing performance and the optimal design scheme of RFCPPEB. Hence, laboratory modeling tests for this symmetric structure and an ABAQUS three-dimensional (3D) numerical simulation analysis were used to study the vertical bearing characteristics on bottom-expanded piles and rigid-flexible composite piles with expanded bottom. The vertical bearing capacity, shaft resistance, pile tip resistance distribution rule, and load sharing ratio of RFCPPEB were analyzed and verified using different bottom expansion dimensions and cemented soil thicknesses. The results revealed that the optimal bottom expansion ratio of rigid bottom-expanded piles was 1.8 when the ratio of pile body to bottom-expanded pile head was 9:1. When the bottom expansion ratio (D/d) was increased, the bearing capacity of bottom-expanded piles was significantly increased at D/d = 1.4 and D/d = 1.8 compared to that of D/d = 1.0, reaching 1.67 and 2.29 times, respectively, while for D/d = 1.6 and D/d = 2.0, the ultimate bearing capacity remained unchanged. Besides, shaft resistance played an important role in the bearing process of the rigid bottom-expanded piles and RFCPPEB. When the shaft resistance was increased, the ultimate bearing capacity of the pile foundation was significantly improved. The shaft resistance of RFCPPEB was increased with increasing cemented soil thickness. The increases in the shaft resistance and thickness of the cemented soil showed a nonlinear growth, and the maximum shaft resistance was approximately 75 cm from the pile top. When the diameter of the expanded head was 1.8 times the diameter of the pipe pile and slightly larger than the thickness of the cemented soil (0.5 times the diameter of the pipe pile), the optimal amount of concrete 425.5 kN/m3 required for per unit volume around piles was obtained, with the RFCPPEB ultimate bearing capacity of 7.5 kN. For RFCPPEB, the soil pressure at the pile tip was directly proportional to the pile top load under small load and was decreased in the form of a half quadric curve under large load. It reached the most reasonable position where the slope of the quadric curve was the largest when the thickness of the cemented soil was larger than 0.5 times the diameter of the pipe pile.
