Experimental and Numerical Simulation of Dry Pressure Drop in High‐Capacity Structured Packings

Abstract: Experimental and numerical studies were conducted on the performance and capacity of structured packings for mixture separation with very low separation factor. Different formations and conditions of the innovative structured packing PACK-2100 with high surface area were studied to evaluate the main characteristics such as dry pressure drop. In addition, numerical simulation was performed to describe the details of the flow structure in these modified structured packings. Three-dimensional computational fluid … Show more

“…Although extensive work has been performed on structured packings, there are limited resources on high‐capacity structured packings. In our previous study , PACK‐2100 was presented as a new wire gauze structured packing with high specific surface area in a high‐porosity domain. Various characteristics of this novel structured packing such as dry/wet pressure drop and height equivalent to a theoretical plate (HETP) evaluation have been experimentally studied under different operating conditions .…”

“…In the late 1990s, the first generation of packings was developed through modifications of the macro‐geometry in a triangular channel . Recently, there has been increasing interest in performing more modifications on the structured packings to increase their capacity and mass transfer performance . However, increasing the capacity often decreases the mass transfer performance of the structured packing.…”

“…F s represents the relationship between the superficial air velocity ( u s ), through the active area or tray free area, and the gas density ( ρ G ), as a function of the temperature and pressure. This factor is used to represent and evaluate the results in many studies both experimental and of CFD , , , , , . true Fnormals = unormals ρnormalG …”
