Experimental and Numerical Investigation of the FRP Shear Mechanism for Concrete Sandwich Panels

Abstract: This paper investigates the composite action of forty-six segments representing precast concrete 10 sandwich panels (PCSP) using the Carbon Fiber Reinforcement Polymer (CFRP) grid/rigid foam as shear 11 mechanism. Various parameters believed to affect the shear flow strength for this CFRP grid/foam system 12 were examined. The parameters that were considered are the spacing between vertical lines of CFRP grids 13 and the thickness of the rigid foam. The research includes comprehensive experimental program that… Show more

“…In order to reduce the effects of thermal mass transfer in PCSP, many research works have taken the option of using alternative materials that have low thermal conductivity such as carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) [39][40][41], Basalt fibre reinforced polymer (BFRP) [23,42,43], and Glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) [44][45][46][47][48][49][50][51]. Theoretically, the structural behaviour and thermal performance of fibre reinforced polymers depends on their chemical composition.…”

“…Actually, using any type of connectors increases the degree of composite action ( DCA ), that is, the ratio between the moment of inertia of the sandwich panel with flexible shear connectors and the moment of inertia of the same sandwich panel with rigid shear connectors, providing a full-composite behavior. The increase in DCA between two concrete wythes increases the structural capacity of a precast concrete sandwich panel, making it more structurally efficient [Hodicky et al (2015)].…”

“…e concept behind sandwich construction is that the skins carry the in-plane compressive and tensile stresses resulting from the induced bending moment, while the main function of the lightweight core is to keep the two skins apart, at a desired distance, and also to resist and transmit shear forces to the supporting points [1]. e general concept of sandwich structures has been investigated and developed by many researchers over the past 50 years, and a lot of theoretical analyses and experiments have been done on the sandwich structures, see for instance, Huang et al [2], Hodicky et al [3], Gay and Hoa [4], Benayoune et al [5], Mahendran and Subaaharan [6], Gara et al [7], and Abdul Hamid and Fudzee [8]. e shear wall structure, with high capacity and lateral stiffness, is an ideal lateral force-resisting structure in high-rise buildings.…”
