Experimental and numerical investigation of airflow and contaminant transport in an airliner cabin mockup

Abstract: The study of airflow and contaminant transport in airliner cabins is very important for creating a comfortable and healthy environment. This paper shows the results of such a study by conducting experimental measurements and numerical simulations of airflow and contaminant transport in a section of half occupied, twin-aisle cabin mockup. The air velocity and air temperature were measured by ultrasonic and omni-directional anemometers. A gaseous contaminant was simulated by a tracer gas, sulfur hexafluoride or … Show more

“…In the present analysis, k -ε turbulent model in the RNG form is adopted, because it was broadly validated by other authors in different enclosed environments [13,16,[18][19][20] and, moreover, for the case analyzed in the present paper, to the best of our knowledge, experimental data, to validate the model, do not exist.…”

“…Recently Zhang et al [16] investigated airflow and contaminant transport in an occupied cabin by both experimental measurements and numerical simulation with CFD. The numerical simulation used the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations based on the RNG k-ε model to calculate the air velocity, air temperature and concentration of gas contaminants.…”

“…Embora o sistema MV proporcione um ambiente com baixa estratificação de temperatura [11]; [5], problemas de desconforto térmico, com sensação de frio ou de calor, têm sido verificados [5]; [10]; [12]. Além disso, a recirculação do ar pela cabine pode dispersar os contaminantes com maior facilidade pelo interior da aeronave.…”

“…Bianco et al [8] studied numerically-transient simulations of the thermal and fluid dynamic fields in the cabin of an executive aircraft, considering 2D and 3D models. In other papers [9][10][11][12][13][14] the studies have been devoted to air quality and the distribution of pollutants, mainly CO and CO 2 .…”
