Experimental and Numerical Analysis of the Behavior of a Monocolumn With a Moonpool

Abstract: Although in most vessels the usual function of a moonpool is a passage for production lines, equipments and divers, the moonpool may be used as a device to reduce the vertical motion of floating structures as it can be observed in published studies. From these published works one may say that changes of the moonpool’s internal geometry modify the behavior of vertical oscillation of the water inside the moonpool. Looking for a “hydrodynamic design of the monocolumn-moonpool”, Petrobras has carried out a set of … Show more

“…This has also been shown in model tests, e.g. by Torres et al (Torres et al 2008) and Kristiansen et al (Kristiansen et al 2011). The drawback of appendage plates, from a practical point of view, is that they reduce the effective area of the moonpool.…”

“…Masetti et al [7] carried out experiments to study the influence of different skirts on the response of monocolumn floating production structure and the influence of variation of the external diameter along the vertical axis. Torres et al [11] published works by changing the internal geometry of the moonpool. Changes of the moon pool internal geometry modified the behaviour of vertical oscillation of the water inside the moonpool.…”
