Experimental and Modeling Study on Diffusion of Selenium under Variable Bentonite Content and Porewater Salinity

Abstract: Effective diffusion coefficients of selenium through bentonite/sand mixtures were obtained by the through-diffusion method under reducing conditions where selenium was dissolved as HSe À and Se 4 2À . Experiments were carried out under variable bentonite content and porewater salinity. Bentonite contents in bentonite/sand mixtures varied from 20 to 70 wt%. The salinities of experimental solutions varied from 0.05 to 0.5 mol dm À3 , simulating brackish groundwater and seawater. Effective diffusion coefficients … Show more

“…For our experimental results, the sequence of D e can be obtained directly from the upper left of Figure , that is, monzogranite > granodiorite-1 > granodiorite-2. This trend also represents the order of the formation factor ( F f , listed in Table ), as ( D w at 25 °C = 8.87 × 10 –10 m 2 /s) . The F f only depends on the inner structure of the porous media, and the values we obtained are comparable to those found in the literature data. …”

“…1b). Nevertheless, in homogeneous media, most chemical reactions involve small molecules with similar or inappropriately differing diffusion coe cients 18,19 . Such di culty can, in principle, be overcome by introducing an unreactive reagent that reversibly binds the activator species, thus causing suitable differences in the diffusion coe cients 6,7,14 .…”

“…Based on the previous studies (Komine 2008;Iida et al 2011), hydraulic conductivities were modeled, assuming that each stack was a parallel plate. Some studies (Bolt 1956;Sidharan & Choudhury 2008) obtained the relation between the pore width of parallel clay plates and the void ratio, but they did so without assuming different widths for the external and interlayer pores.…”
