Experimental and Kinetic Modeling Studies of Methanol Transformation to Hydrocarbons Using Zeolite-Based Catalysts: A Review

Abstract: As the need for petroleum products is increasing, it has led to increased crude oil prices. For an alternative approach, much research has been done in the field of catalytic conversion of methanol-to-hydrocarbon (MTH). The MTH process is suitable, which converts methanol directly into gasoline and other valuable hydrocarbons. The review provides information about methanol to olefins (MTO), methanol to aromatics (MTA), and MTH processes involved in converting oxygenates into hydrocarbons and information regard… Show more

“…5,6 More recently, gasoline, aromatics, and olefins have been produced by methanol-to-hydrocarbon technology using zeolites. 7,8 Moreover, zeolites have been used to treat vehicle exhaust gases (i.e., NO x removal). 9,10 Zeolites have also been used as catalysts in the conversion of biomass and in the activation of light alkane to form oxygenates, such as methanol.…”

“…The foundation for the production of motor fuel from oxygenates was laid by the commercialization of the first methanol (МеОН) to gasoline conversion process (MTG process) implemented by Mobil Oil Corp. In the known versions of the MTG process ExxonMobil Research and Engineering Co (EMRE) and Syngas to Fuels (STF), the feedstock is МеОН obtained from syngas 2,5 . In the second stage, МеОН is converted to DME, which is converted to gasoline hydrocarbons in the third stage.…”

“…Modern technologies for the conversion of carbon raw materials to liquid hydrocarbons (HC) via syngas have been increasingly used to produce synthetic fuels and petrochemical raw materials. “…Despite the industrial realization, the scientific interest in studying the process has not faded away. Currently, many works are published on the development of new catalysts, the influence of physicochemical, structural properties of zeolites on the selectivity of products, the study of reaction mechanism and catalyst deactivation, and the kinetics study [9,10]. The collaborative efforts of scientists bring us closer to understanding the process, but there is still no reliable kinetic model that can extrapolate process parameters with acceptable accuracy.…”
