Experimental and analytical study on the performance of particle tuned mass dampers under seismic excitation

Abstract: Summary A particle tuned mass damper (PTMD), which is a creative integration of a traditional tuned mass damper and an efficient particle damper in the vibration control area, is proposed. This paper presents a comprehensive study that involves experimental, analytical, and computational approaches. The vibration control effects of a PTMD that is attached to a five‐story steel frame under seismic input are investigated by a series of shaking table tests. The influence of some parameters (auxiliary mass ratio, … Show more

“…All of these problems have a significant influence on the accuracy of the results. [128] 4.2 | Simplified analytical method Considering the challenges in large calculations involving the DEM, Lu et al [74] proposed a simplified analytical method, on the basis of the correlational studies conducted by Papalou and Masri. [52,110,111] The essence of this method is to make all particles being equivalent to a single one, on the basis of certain equivalence principles, to simulate the vibration effects of particle dampers.…”

“…This type of variant mainly includes the impact damper-tuned absorber combination, [71][72][73] the particle TMD, [74][75][76] and the tuned liquid particle damper. [77] The concept of integrating the impact damper with the tuned absorber was introduced first by Masri [78] in 1971, who proposed the use of the dynamic vibration neutralizer (i.e., TMD) with motion-limiting stops that reflect the physics of an impact damper interacting with the primary system when a motion threshold is exceeded.…”

“…Tuned mass dampers (TMD) are one of the most traditional vibration control devices [2][3][4][5][6], and it usually consists of a mass, some springs and damping elements [7]. Because TMDs have the advantages of small size and little interference to pedestrian bridges, they are widely used to control human-induced vibrations and solve the serviceability problem [8][9][10].…”

“…Marko et al studied the seismic response of a structure equipped with multiple types of dampers [25]. Furthermore, some dampers with hybrid energy consumption mechanisms were designed to enhance damping performance [26][27][28][29][30]. Lee and his group developed a new hybrid energy dissipation device, combining a steel slit damper and rotational friction dampers [27].…”
