Experimental analysis of the humidification of air in bubble columns for thermal water treatment systems

Abstract: The humidification-dehumidification process (HDH) for desalination is a promising technology to address water scarcity issues in rural regions. However, a low humidifier efficiency is a weakness of the process. Bubble column humidifiers (BCH) are promising for HDH, as they provide enhanced heat and mass transfer and have low maintenance requirements. Previous studies of HDH-systems with BCHs draw different conclusions regarding the impact of superficial air velocity and liquid height on the humidification. Fur… Show more

“…The latter has greater effect in relative to the former as more effective dehumidifier allows higher water vapor condensation rate. The humidifier and dehumidifier can be configured in several ways including pack bed and bubble column towers, [65,66] which have large contact area and low thermal resistances. The influences of varying the operating conditions of these configurations such as pressure, air flow rate, water temperature on the humidification and dehumidification efficiency have also been well investigated.…”

“…Eder and Preißinger 177 investigated experimentally the performance of the humidification process with the bubble column humidifier using optical access in the bubble column. By comparing the optical assessment with the measurement data of the experimental test, the optical assessment contributed greatly to a better clarification during the bubble humidification process.…”
