Experimental analysis of a small engine operating on diesel–natural gas and soybean vegetable oil–natural gas

Abstract: The purpose of this article is to investigate the effects of an unmodified small engine operating on diesel oil-natural gas (DO-NG) and soybean vegetable oil-natural gas at intermediate load. This is significant to reduce our dependency from diesel oil and the emissions of warming gases. Although it is important to highlight that the literature regarding this experimental conditions is scarce, due the use of soybean vegetable oil and natural gas in dual-fuel mode, characterizing a totally diesel oil replacemen… Show more

“…Figure 2 presents the in-cylinder pressure of the single-zone zero-dimensional model in relation to the experimental data reported by Telli et al (2020). The modelling verification was carried out for IMEP = 4 bar, CA50 = 4 CAD ATDC, CR = 14:1, N = 1800 rpm, Tin = 406 K, Pin = 1.4 bar,  = 1.4 and H2O injected = 7% mass basis.…”

“…Table 2 presents the engine's geometric configurations used in the numerical analysis with the single-zone model. The numerical model was verified using Telli et al (2020) experimental data from an ethanol HCCI cylinder with the same configurations shown in Table 2. In the experiments, the threecylinder engine was coupled to an electric generator, operating at a constant speed of 1800 rpm and with 10 kW of electric power.…”

“…Thus, the analysis was conducted on the same mass basis. The methods applied to calculate specific fuel consumption, based on the electric power of the alternator, was also used by De Oliveira et al [33], Vailatti et al [46], and Telli et al [47]. For specific emissions calculations, Eqs.…”

“…Generally, renewable fuels have the potential to achieve near zero CO 2 emissions in Well-to-Wheel balance, decreasing greenhouse gas emissions levels [3]. In the literature, many renewable fuels have been investigated and have emerged as a promising candidate to replace conventional fuels, such as biodiesel [4,5], ethanol [6,7] and straight vegetable oils [8,9].…”
