Experimental access to higher-order Zeeman effects by precision spectroscopy of highly charged ions in a Penning trap

Abstract: We present an experimental concept and setup for laser-microwave double-resonance spectroscopy of highly charged ions in a Penning trap. Such spectroscopy allows a highly precise measurement of the Zeeman splittings of fine-and hyperfine-structure levels due the magnetic field of the trap. We have performed detailed calculations of the Zeeman effect in the framework of quantum electrodynamics of bound states as present in such highly charged ions. We find that apart from the linear Zeeman effect, second-and th… Show more

“…The laser-microwave double-resonance technique [69][70][71][72][73] allows precise measurements of the Zeeman splittings of fine-and hyperfine-structure levels in a Penning trap. This, apart from the linear Zeeman effect, provides an access to the second-and third-order Zeeman effect with highly charged ions.…”

“…With these ions, laser-microwave double resonance spectroscopy will be performed as described in detail in [22,24]. This is also an excellent test case for further studies with heavier ions of higher charge states as available from the HITRAP [30,31] facility in its present configuration and future configurations in the framework of the FLAIR project.…”
