This chapter is concerned with young people’s voices in spoken word popular music projects. It is argued that for projects that engage young people with and through music, it is important to consider their voice in all its iterations, which includes young people’s artistic voice. Using the concept of voice, this chapter shows how projects need to be designed in a way that captures young people’s voices throughout the project and includes the non-verbal (i.e., musical) dimensions of their voices as forms of communication. Such inclusion necessitates the creation of intersubjective meaning through the negotiation of hierarchies, knowledges, expertise, and agency. As a result of the negotiation process, the role of the researcher can be redefined. By acknowledging the different epistemologies of the project participants, impact beyond the anticipated outcomes can be uncovered. Focusing on participation as an inclusive method, young people should be included in the planning, delivery, and evaluation of projects. Given a certain flexibility and space within projects, unintended outcomes can be identified through and responded to by the young people themselves. This way, impact becomes a phenomenological variable and allows for various forms of data and types of analysis to be used for the evaluation of projects.

In real life and activities, music is everywhere. With the development of the times, Chinese pop music and traditional music have also continued to develop and present new characteristics. However, there is no fixed law in the development of music, and traditional analysis methods cannot capture the current situation of music development in time. Probability theory and mathematical statistics is a subject that studies possibility, which contains many analytical methods. To this end, the article takes the current situation of music teaching development as an example. From the perspective of probability theory and mathematical statistics, the correlation coefficient is introduced and incorporated into the analysis of the development status of popular music and traditional music. In this study, first the general methods of probability theory and mathematical statistics are analyzed, then related experiments from the mathematical level are designed, and a series of investigations are carried out. Finally, starting from the four groups of schools, teachers, parents, and students, the article raises the field of comparison from the campus to the society and focuses on comparing the comprehensive development status of Chinese popular music and traditional music. After a series of experiments and analysis, it can be concluded that the correlation between the students’ interest level and the development status of popular music reaches 7.33, and the correlation with the development status of traditional music reaches 7.61. At the same time, after analysis, it is found that most of the students prefer popular music, but they know little about Chinese traditional music. This fully shows that the comparison of the status quo of Chinese popular music and traditional music based on probability theory and mathematical statistics can intuitively describe the development status of the two, which is very important for promoting the national music and creating a good music environment.

The history of popular music in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) is marked by disproportion on the one hand and gaps on the other. The majority of studies focus on phenomena that are assigned subversive qualities and the potential to lead to fundamental social change: jazz, blues, folk, and various styles of rock music. These genres are well documented in the archives that have opened up since the fall of the Berlin Wall. As Schlager, musicals or the operetta are considered to be light entertainment rather than culture, they are rarely researched. Gaps also exist with regard to the analysis of the musical artefact itself. Most research projects are dominated by an interest in historical events and focus on political forces and social effects, and the music itself is often ignored in favour of a discussion of the socio-political framework. This special issue presents new findings and invites a discussion on those methods that may contribute to a broadening of the perspectives on the history of popular music in the GDR.
