Experiences with opt-in, at-home screening for SARS-CoV-2 at a primary school in Germany: an implementation study

Abstract: BackgroundOver the course of the pandemic, many countries have repeatedly closed schools and shifted schoolchildren to remote learning. However, evidence for negative mental and physiological health consequences of such measures for schoolchildren is increasing, highlighting the need for evidence-based recommendations on how to safely reopen schools. This study aims to assess implementation experiences, acceptability and feasibility of opt-in, at-home SARS-CoV-2 screening using rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) to… Show more

“…However, testing was seen as a way to afford individuals peace of mind when interacting with others, including family and friends and those perceived to be more vulnerable to the effects of COVID-19 infection. In the Liverpool pilot evaluation, 16% of respondents stated that they would also highlight the peace of mind given by testing if promoting testing to others, findings echoed elsewhere 11 12 15. In fixed survey responses in the Birmingham survey, more than half of participants stated that there were likely to see friends and family following a negative LFT result.…”

“…[NJ]) [30], another the RIDA QUICK SARS-CoV-2 Antigen (R-Biopharm, German) [32] and for the third the Ag-RDT used was unclear [27]. In eleven data sets (64.7% of all data sets), the sample type was anterior nasal / mid-turbinate (AN/MT) [28][29][30][31][32][33]35 [29,31,33,34] for testing twice weekly.…”

“…Linkage for positive tests: Actions after a positive test result were reported in 11 datasets across two different settings. In nine data sets, positive results in mostly asymptomatic people required isolation (eight data sets) [16,17,29,31] or an invitation to seek confirmatory rRT-PCR testing (one data set) [15]. Second, in two datasets, positive test results of contacts already in quarantine required isolation [15,28].…”
