Experiences with Occupancy based Building Management Systems

Abstract: Buildings are one of the largest consumers of electricity. Dominant electricity consumption within the buildings, contributed by plug loads, lighting and air conditioning, can be significantly improved using Occupancy-based Building Management Systems (Ob-BMS). In this paper, we address three critical aspects of Ob-BMS i.e. 1) Modular sensor node design to support diverse deployment scenarios; 2) Building architecture to support and scale fine resolution monitoring; and 3) Detailed analysis of the collected da… Show more

“…In a hospital environment, it is important to consider data protection, that is anonymity of the people, as well as accurate detection of people whether they are as individuals or in groups. Prior research work has proposed the use of various technologies such as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) [6], [8], Wi-Fi [9] and sensor networks [10], [11], [12], [13] to monitor occupancy.…”

“…A deeper understanding of these different settings in developing countries can help in the development of systems that can scale across diverse settings in a robust manner. We have been involved in sensor network deployments in the Indian context for more than a year [7], whereby, we have instrumented 25 homes with smart meters, a smart campus with sensors for ambient monitoring in a research wing and 52 smart meters in the institute dorms. In this paper, we discuss an extensive ongoing deployment in a three storey home in Delhi, India, spanning 73 days from May-August 2013.…”
