Matlab Simulink is one of the major modeling and simulation tools applied in different embedded systems domain. Quality assurance is an essential, but often highly effort-consuming part of software development. A lot of different quality assurance techniques exist to ensure high quality, but these analysis and testing techniques are often applied in isolation. Therefore, we are interested in synergy effects when applying them in combination. Consequently, we performed a systematic mapping study to identify the current state of the art regarding such quality assurance techniques and existing combinations. Our main result is a classification of existing quality assurance techniques applied on Matlab Simulink models, and an overview of existing tool support and the validity of the approaches.

So far no qualifiable automatic code generators (ACGs) are available for Modelica. Hence, digital control applications can be modeled and simulated in Modelica, but require tedious additional efforts (e.g., manual reprogramming) to produce qualifiable target system production code. In order to more fully leverage the potential of a model-based development (MBD) process in Modelica, a qualifiable automatic code generator is needed.Typical Modelica code generation is a fairly complex process which imposes a huge development burden to any efforts of tool qualification. This work aims at mapping a Modelica subset for digital control function development to a well-understood synchronous data-flow kernel language. This kernel language allows to resort to established compilation techniques for data-flow languages which are understood enough to be accepted by certification authorities.The mapping is established by providing a translational semantics from the Modelica subset to the synchronous data-flow kernel language. However, this translation turned out to be more intricate than initially expected and has given rise to several interesting issues that require suitable design decisions regarding the mapping and the language subset.

The conventional process of developing protection algorithms for substation Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) follows a V-development model of specification, design, coding, unit testing, integration, verification and validation. The code is implemented manually and is specific to a particular platform. This process is labour and time intensive, the source codes may also need to be rewritten or modified when a new platform is developed. Moreover, with the increased complexity of the protection algorithms, integrity requirements, short development time scales and rapid changes to the IED platform, the traditional approach is no longer efficient, reliable or cost-effective. A new approach has been developed and proven to improve the process efficiency by adapting a Model-Based Design (MBD) technique, which introduces a modelling concept at the design stage with a particular emphasis on reusability and platform independence. The model can be executed, verified and refined until it becomes the blueprint for the final implementation through automatic code generation. Software in-the-loop (SIL) and hardware in-the-loop (HIL) testing can be performed to ensure that the performance of the generated code is comparable to that of the model itself. The code can then be re-generated with specific platform dependent interfaces for integration and validation. Finally, the development of an over/under-power protection function is chosen as case study. The work consists of specification, modelling, testing and code generation. The generated code is integrated into an existing product platform to compare with the traditional coding methodology. The performance in terms of accuracy, execution speed and memory requirements are compared to the software produced by manual coding.
