BackgroundWomen’s childbirth experience can have immediate as well as long-term positive or negative effects on their life, well-being and health. When evaluating and drawing conclusions from research results, women’s experiences of childbirth should be one aspect to consider. Researchers and clinicians need help in finding and selecting the most suitable instrument for their purpose. The aim of this study was therefore to systematically identify and present validated instruments measuring women’s childbirth experience.MethodsA systematic review was conducted in January 2016 with a comprehensive search in the bibliographic databases PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, The Cochrane Library and PsycINFO. Included instruments measured women’s childbirth experiences. Papers were assessed independently by two reviewers for inclusion, and quality assessment of included instruments was made by two reviewers independently and in pairs using Terwee et al’s criteria for evaluation of psychometric properties.ResultsIn total 5189 citations were screened, of which 5106 were excluded by title and abstract. Eighty-three full-text papers were reviewed, and 37 papers were excluded, resulting in 46 included papers representing 36 instruments. These instruments demonstrated a wide range in purpose and content as well as in the quality of psychometric properties.ConclusionsThis systematic review provides an overview of existing instruments measuring women’s childbirth experiences and can support researchers to identify appropriate instruments to be used, and maybe adapted, in their specific contexts and research purpose.Electronic supplementary materialThe online version of this article (doi:10.1186/s12884-017-1356-y) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.

Background: The adoption of respectful maternity care during labour and birth is complex process which needs both scientific and interpersonal skills of providers. In this regard, identifying the potential barriers and applying effective strategies for implementing respectful maternity care are essential. This study aimed to explore the perceptions of Iranian midwives regarding respectful maternity care during labour and childbirth.Methods: This was a qualitative study which was conducted from September-December 2018 in two non-teaching public hospitals in Tehran, Iran. Twenty four semi-structured interviews were conducted with midwives, who had more than one year work experience in labor and childbirth units, through a purposive sampling method. The data was analyzed using conventional content analysis approach and managed by MAX QDA 10 software.Results: Three themes were extracted including showing empathy, women-centered care and protecting rights. Showing empathy reflects that establishing a friendly relationship and being with women. Women-centered care indicated keeping women safe and participating in decision making.Protecting rights reflected a need for safeguarding dignity as well as giving equal care and preparing appropriate environment.Conclusions: Iranian midwives considered respectful maternity care a broader concept rather than preventing mistreatment. Providing supportive care through friendly interaction with women was the first step for providing respectful maternity care. Promoting respectful care also should be through performing safe care by implementing evidence-based care and women's involvement in their care as well as appropriate environment for women, families and caregivers.The datasets used and/or analyzed during the current study are available from the corresponding author upon reasonable request. “…For women with an uncomplicated pregnancy who do not want to give birth at home, birth centres provide an alternative to a hospital birth, with a home-like atmosphere, all kinds of conveniences, and their own midwife and a maternity care assistant to support them during labour and birth. In the Dutch Birth Centre Study several aspects of birth centre care were studied 4 , including client experiences 15 . INTRODUCTIONIn the Netherlands birth centres have recently become an alternative option as places where women with uncomplicated pregnancies can give birth. This article focusses on the job satisfaction of three groups of maternity care providers (community midwives, clinical care providers and maternity care assistants) working in or with a birth centre compared to those working only in a hospital or at home. METHODS In 2015, an existing questionnaire was adapted and distributed to maternity care providers and 4073 responses were received. Using factor analyses, two composite measures were constructed, a Composite Job Satisfaction scale and an Assessment-of-Working-in-or-with-a-Birth-Centre scale. Differences between groups were tested with Student's t-test and MANOVA with post hoc test and linear regression analyses. RESULTS The overall score on the Composite Job Satisfaction scale did not differ between community midwives or clinical care providers working in or with a birth centre and those working in a different setting. For maternity care assistants there was a small but significantly higher score for those not working in a birth centre. Maternity care assistants' overall job satisfaction score was higher than that of both other groups. In a linear regression analysis working or not working in or with a birth centre was related to the overall job satisfaction score, but repeated for the three professional groups separately, this relation was only found for maternity care assistants. CONCLUSIONS Job satisfaction is generally high, but, except for maternity care assistants, not related to the setting (working or not working in or with a birth centre). AFFILIATION
