Experiences of support garments following bowel stoma formation: analysis of free-text responses in a cross-sectional survey

Abstract: AimTo explore the experiences of support garments when adjusting to bodily change following bowel stoma formation.DesignThematic analyses of free-text responses in a cross-sectional survey of the stoma population in 2018.MethodsFree-text responses were invited so that respondents could describe their experiences in more detail. “…This is the first study to investigate the experiences and meaning of support garments for people living with a urostomy and adds to recently reported evidence about use of support garments in adjusting to stoma-formation surgery (Hubbard et al 2019). These findings add further insights to the main survey views of support garments which reveal how support garments enable people to cope with the disruptions that stomas impose in their day-to-day lives (Hubbard et al, 2019).…”

“…Wearing a support garment can contribute to a feeling of safety, looking normal (Hubbard et al, 2019 ; Johnson et al, 2015 ) and conceal the parastomal bulge (Hubbard et al, 2019 ; Krogsgaard et al, 2017a ). Physical symptoms such as pain (Krogsgaard et al, 2017b ), a bearing-down or falling out sensation (Hubbard et al, 2019 ; Krogsgaard et al, 2017a ) can be relieved. A garment might prevent or contain a leakage of the stoma (Hubbard et al, 2019 ).…”

A garment might prevent or contain a leakage of the stoma (Hubbard et al, 2019 ). Some patients wear the garment to reduce the risk of developing a parastomal bulge or prevent enlargement of a bulge (Hubbard et al, 2019 ) although this is not supported by evidence (Krogsgaard, 2020 ).…”
