Experiences of an Online Treatment for Adolescents With Nonsuicidal Self-injury and Their Caregivers: Qualitative Study

Abstract: Background Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is common in adolescence and is associated with several adverse outcomes. Despite this, few established treatment options exist. Online treatment seems promising for several conditions; however, knowledge on NSSI is scarce. It is important to explore how online treatment for NSSI is experienced to improve such interventions and learn more about factors that are important in the treatment of adolescents with NSSI. “…The therapist-guided IERITA used in this study had been optimized based on feasibility studies, [15][16][17] and feedback from patients and end-user representatives. IERITA is a web-based, acceptance-based behavioral treatment that includes 11 modules for the adolescent participant and 6 modules for the parents delivered over the course of 12 weeks.…”

“…8,9 Open trial data provide support for the utility of a 12-week internet-delivered emotion regulation individual therapy for adolescents (IERITA) in the treatment of NSSI. [15][16][17] Not only does this treatment aim to improve NSSI by directly targeting its underlying mechanism of emotion dysregulation, internet-delivered treatments with minimal clinician support have the potential to augment community therapy and increase availability of specialized psychological treatments. [18][19][20] This study presents the results from what is to our knowledge the first randomized clinical trial of internet-delivered treatment for adolescents with NSSID.…”

“…The STAR consortium behind this cognitive intervention has now taken on the task of investigating I‐CDP as an online therapeutic intervention ( Star‐Projekt ). The Swedish and Danish feasibility studies of the internet‐based intervention ERITA (J Bjureberg et al., 2018 ; Morthorst et al., 2021 ; Simonsson et al., 2021 ) plus the completed Swedish randomised, controlled trial (Bjureberg, J. 2022 in review) suggest that ERITA is worthy of further studies.…”

“…Furthermore, a parent program is included focusing on emotional awareness and how to support their adolescent. ERITA has shown promise in uncontrolled, open trial designs (Bjureberg et al, 2017(Bjureberg et al, , 2018Simonsson et al, 2021), but has yet to be tested in randomised clinical trials.…”
