Experiences from use of an LVDC system in public electricity distribution

Abstract: Experiences from the field setup of utility grid low voltage DC (LVDC) distribution are discussed. LVDC distribution being a novel approach to public electricity distribution, a research platform is realised to enable practical studies. The goal of the setup is to combine the requirements of the fully functional LVDC system and a flexible research platform. The scope of the paper is to discuss experiences from first six months of continuous use of the setup. The paper focuses on comparing how expected and real… Show more

“…Efficiency is a key measure to achieve the EU 2020 targets; therefore LVDC distribution system will play a great role in improving efficiency. LVDC distribution system is more efficient than AC system [3] as the AC system is more prone to losses when it is used to distribute power within buildings due to the individual conversion stages of consumer electronics. The three targets defined by the EU as a benchmark to be achieved by 2020 are [4]:…”

“…This is significantly important for rural networks which have long feeders and system efficiency can be an issue. The experience from a real rural LVDC test network as a part of Finnish national smart grids research program has concluded that LVDC is more efficient solution to rural ac networks when the feeders lengths are over 1 km [8]. LVDC has also the potential to enable increased power flow capacity for urban networks to supply higher load density.…”
