Experience With Vasal Sperm Aspiration

Abstract: Vasal aspiration of sperm should be considered when electroejaculation fails, is not available or is contraindicated. Although the overall sperm quality and pregnancy rate are higher with vasal aspiration and in vitro fertilization than electroejaculation and intrauterine insemination, vasal aspiration is a more technically demanding and costly approach to conception.

“…Because of ICSI, methods were developed to obtain sperm from men with little or no sperm in their ejaculate. These methods included retrieval of sperm from the testicle (28,31,32), the epididymis (27,30), and the vas deferens (36,37). Sperm retrieved from these structures, in combination with ICSI, resulted in PRs between 30% and 60% (51, 52).…”

“…For patients suffering from AE but not spinal cord injury (SCI), drug therapy for the reversal of AE was conducted almost exclusively with alpha agonistic drugs (imipramine, ephedrine, pseudoephedrine). Only one author treated one SCI patient unsuccessfully with alpha agonistic drugs (Levine & Fakouri, 1998). In contrast, parasympathomimetic (acethylcholine esterase antagonists) drugs (physostigmine, neostigmine) for reversal of AE were almost exclusively used in patients with AE following spinal cord injury and only one patient with idiopathic AE was treated with physostigmine (Vanderschueren et al ., 1998).…”
