Experience With Ultrasound Scissors and Blades (UltraCision) in Open and Laparoscopic Liver Resection

Abstract: The advantages over other resection techniques are limited heat and smoke generation and the lack of current flow through the patient. The handling and coagulation and cutting quality of the UltraCision appeared satisfactory and safe. The new instrument can be recommended for laparoscopic and open resections of the liver.

“…5 In thyroidectomy, because the blood supply of the gland is rich, low-power levels are preferred and blood vessel division is achieved by an increase of pressure at the tip of the instrument after hemostasis is complete. The UAS have been used for several years in laparoscopic surgery, [6][7][8][9] but also in general and gynecological surgery. [10][11][12][13][14][15] In our prospective study, we performed a comparative analysis of 2 patient groups with no differences in age, sex, and underlying disease.…”

“…A: HS is the only instrument that can simultaneously cut and coagulate (it can coagulate vessel until 2-3 mm of diameter [43]); it's useful on cirrhotic liver [44]; no electricity passes through the patient and there's no smoke production (especially useful in laparoscopic surgery); it can be used in laparoscopic and laparotomic surgery. D: The instrument results in a continuous bleeding risk related to the blind tissue penetration to coagulate vessels hidden into the hepatic parenchyma.…”
