Experience with implementation of a radiology speech recognition system

Abstract: Recent advances in speech recognition technology have allowed development of computer systems for real-time radiologist-driven generation of reports. The transition to a speech recognition system is a technically complex process with many potential piffalls that can decrease efficiency and disrupt workflow. In our recent experience with installation of such a system in an academic radiology department, factors that have worked against optimal performance have included environmental Iogistics, hardware incompat… Show more

“…According to the results of [16], 5% improvement in accuracy among users with different levels of training indicates this fact that the training of users leads to enhanced system accuracy. About 3% of the error is related to the non-coverage of the vocabulary of the database which can be added to the system easily.…”

“…Given the use of professional headset microphone, the environmental noise is due to the lack of a separate room for the dictating the system. According to [16][17][18], data collection in a separate environment or independent room for dictation can eliminate this problem and enhance the accuracy of the system up to 95%.…”

“…Much like military telemedicine studies, the civilian literature assesses local implementations or specialty applications of telemedicine (Brecht, Gray, Peterson, &, Youngblood 1996;Mekhjian, Warisse, Gailium, & McCain 1996;Lambrecht 1997;McCue et al 1997;Houston and Rupp 2000;Zaylor, Whitten and Kingsley 2000). However, an important recurring theme in civilian telemedicine literature is the call for the development of specific categories for evaluating telemedicine as a comprehensive information system.…”
