Experience with gestational surrogacy as a treatment for sterility resulting from hysterectomy

Abstract: A retrospective study was carried out to assess the potential of 16 hysterectomized women to achieve surrogate pregnancies. A total of 11 patients completed 16 cycles of assisted conception treatment incorporating in-vitro fertilization and gestational surrogacy. Three other women failed to respond to ovulation induction while two more patients produced few oocytes which also failed to fertilize. Six host mothers became pregnant thereby giving a pregnancy rate of 37.5% (6/16) per patient and embryo transfer an… Show more

Meniru and Craft (1997) reported six IVF surrogate pregnancies among 16 genetic mothers in whom hysterectomy had been carried out (7). Corson et al.…”

“…Gestational surrogacy has been used as an assisted reproductive treatment alternative whereby a woman gestates genetically unrelated embryos produced in an in vitro fertilization (IVF) laboratory with the gametes of a commissioning couple 7 . The first pregnancy following gestational surrogacy was reported 25 years ago; 8 since then, gestational surrogacy has become a viable remedy for couples who would otherwise be unable to conceive because of a nonfunctional uterus, excessive medical risk associated with pregnancy, or from failed attempts at conception with standard treatment options 9–14 . However, due to its complicated ethical issues, gestational surrogacy is outlawed in many countries worldwide.…”

[9][10][11][12][13][14] However, due to its complicated ethical issues, gestational surrogacy is outlawed in many countries worldwide. In order to avoid the ethical considerations raised by IVF surrogacy, such as the autonomy doi: 10.1111/j.1749-6632.2011.05952.x of the surrogate mother, possible risks for both embryo and surrogate carrier, and the psychological implication for the child, 15,16 the development of a successful uterine transplantation technique would offer women displaying severe uterine infertility an option to become social, genetic, and gestational mothers.…”
