Experience using the IBM Supply Chain Simulator

Abstract: The IBM Supply Chain Simulator (SCS) is a software tool that can help a company or a group of companies make strategic business decisions about the design and operation of its supply chain. SCS and its predecessors were originally developed by IBM Research to improve IBM's internal supply chains. The tool has played an important role in the resurgence of IBM over the last six years. In 1997 the IBM Industry Solution Units began using the tool to help its clients improve their supply chains. After about a year … Show more

“…SCS helps organizations determine the strategies that have the potential to provide the most flexible and profitable operating environment (Huang et al, 2003). SCS differs from the conventional types of simulations (e.g., traditional manufacturing simulation) because it spans far beyond the confines of a single entity and its goal is to improve the financial position of an entire enterprise or a group of trading partners (Bagchi et al, 1998). This particular goal makes the application of this OR technique relevant to our study.…”

“…The M&S approach was adopted in several works in order to reduce the complexity of the supply chain and evaluate its performance (Bagchi et al, 1998;Labarthe et al, 2007). M&S translates the supply chain conceptual model and recreates the complexity and highly stochastic environment of a supply chain.…”

“…For example, some authors (Lee et al, 2002;Longo and Mirabelli, 2008;Ingalls, 1998) highlight the features and advantages of a decision-making tool based on the modelling and discrete event simulation. The M&S approach has been adopted in several works in order to reduce the complexity of the SCM and evaluate its performance (Bagchi et al, 1998;Labarthe et al, 2007).…”
